TECHNICAL BULLETIN #53 - Rev 1.10 (9/03/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Incomplete File Transfers: "No Carrier" PRODUCT : Procomm Plus 4.x, 3.x ============================================================================== Normally, a progress window appears during a file transfer to display the transfer's status. If your file transfers are incomplete, and the progress window displays a "No Carrier" message and then the window disappears, you need to set Procomm Plus to ignore the CD signal. This document details how to configure Procomm Plus to ignore the signal during file transfers. WHAT IS CARRIER DETECT? Carrier Detect (CD) is a signal which is reported by your modem when it is connected to another modem. During normal operation, this signal will remain constant while you are connected to another system. However, conditions such as noisy phone lines and faulty hardware can sporadically interrupt this signal. During a file transfer, Procomm Plus can monitor the CD line and abort a file transfer if the CD signal is interrupted. When the file transfer is aborted, Procomm Plus will display a "No Carrier" message in the progress window and the window will quickly disappear. This feature is useful if you are not using an error-correcting modem; CD interruptions are a good indicator that data may be corrupted due to noisy lines or faulty conditions. However, noise will not hurt a file transfer if both systems are using error-correcting modems. In other conditions, monitoring the CD line is not advantageous. Some users connect to other systems directly using a null-modem cable instead of a modem and phone line. In these cases, the CD signal will not exist since CD is a signal generated by a modem. These users will never complete a file transfer if Procomm Plus monitors the CD signal during the transfer. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS: If you are using an external modem, you may have either a faulty serial cable or port which is not accurately reporting the CD signal. In addition, 9 to 25 pin serial cable adapters are prime suspects for losing signals in this situation. You can test this by replacing the serial cable with a new one or attaching your modem to a different serial port on your PC. ABORT XFER IF CD LOST The following procedure will disable CD monitoring during file transfers for Procomm Plus. 1. At the Terminal window, click Setup | Data | Data Options | Advanced. 2. If the Abort transfer if CD lost checkbox is checked, then click within the Abort transfer if CD lost checkbox to disable the feature and click on the OK push-button to accept the new setting. 3. Retry your download. ============================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
