TECHNICAL BULLETIN #166 - Rev 1.10 (9/03/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : File Association Under Windows 95 PRODUCT : Procomm plus 4.x, 3.x ============================================================================== If you attempt to fax a document that Windows 95 does not associate with a program, you will see the following Windows error message "There is no application associated with this file. Choose the Associate item from the File menu of File Manager to allow faxing of this file type." This message is misleading since file association is done differently in Windows 95. This document explains how to set up a file association to allow your documents to be automatically faxed from Procomm plus. Why file association is needed ------------------------------ Say you want to fax a Word document while in Procomm Plus. After selecting the recipient and a .doc file, Procomm plus queries Windows to see what application is associated with this file extension. Windows recognizes the .doc extension and replies with the path and the Word executable file name. With this information, Procomm plus can bring up Word with the document open and print it to the "Procomm Plus" printer driver automatically. Not all extensions will be registered in Windows. Although you will still be able to fax while within the unregistered application, you will not be able to take advantage of the automated process described above and fax from Procomm plus. How to associate a file under Windows 95 ---------------------------------------- 1. Open My Computer. 2. Click on View | Options in the menu bar of Explorer. 3. Select the File Types tab and click on the button labeled New Type. 4. Now, enter a description in the Description of Type field. Whatever is put here will be added to the list of associations as a description. Examples are "Bitmap Image", "Audio CD", and "PROCOMM PLUS FAX". 5. Enter the file extension in the Associated Extension field. The extension can not be longer than three letters and you do not need to type the period. You will not be allowed to enter an extension this is already associated. 6. Click on the New button. You will see a box labeled New Action. In the Action field, enter "open".. 7. Next, go to the Application Used to Perform Action field. Here you are telling Windows 95 what to use to "open" a document with this extension. Put in the path and filename of the application you want to use or use the Browse button to locate it. Once theses fields are filled, click OK. 8. Once again click on New and type "print" into the Action field type. Re-enter the path and application you are wanting to use or use the Browse button. Click OK when finished. 9. You should see "open" and "print" in the Actions fields. If this is true, click on OK. 10. Scroll down the list of Registered File Types until you find your new entry and select it. In File Type Details you will see the new entry you just created with the proper application in the Opens With field. Click on the OK button to save the settings. 11. You have now successfully associated your file extension. For more information about associating a file type with a program, see the "To create or modify a file type" topic in Windows 95 Help. ============================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
