TECHNICAL BULLETIN #115 Rev 1.10 (9/06/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Using WinLink PRODUCT : Procomm plus 4.x, 3.x ============================================================================== WinLink is a DATASTORM provided script that enhances the communication capability of your computer system. Using WinLink, a user can establish a virtual connection to another computer with full access to all directories and files. The functional user interface makes file transfers between two computers running Procomm plus simple and efficient. ADVANTAGES OF USING WINLINK WinLink is designed specifically to make file transfers between two computers easy and practical. The main advantage of using WinLink versus Procomm plus' Host mode or other communication packages is that users do not have to concern themselves with terminal emulations or line settings. When WinLink is running, Procomm plus will automatically adjust its communication settings for the WinLink session. Another advantage in using WinLink is security. The only users that will have access to your system will be those who have the password to the WinLink server. And perhaps the greatest advantage of using WinLink is the ease of conducting file transfers. If you are comfortable using Windows File Manager to copy and manipulate files on your hard drive, you will easily be able to copy files from one computer to the other with a click of the mouse. FIRST TIME RUNNING WINLINK To run the WinLink script, simply select WinLink from the Script File rapid start list on the Action Bar. When you launch the WinLink script, a control window will appear and ask you to run WinLink in Client mode, Server mode, or to execute the Setup utility. At this point, choosing any of the three options will immediately start the Setup utility, which must be configured before entering Client or Server mode. WINLINK'S SETUP UTILITY The Setup utility is quick simple to configure. You will only have to choose the connection method (modem or direct connect) and a password. To choose which connection method you need, simply click the button next to Choice. If you will be accessing a remote computer over the telephone system, choose modem as your connection. If you will be using WinLink to transfer files between two computers connected serially, choose Direct Connect. Once you have chosen your method of connection, you will set a password. This password will allow you to access the remote computer. The remote computer must also be set up with the same password for access. The password field will accept alpha-numeric input with a maximum of eleven characters. When the connection method and password field are complete, click OK and the configurations will be automatically saved RUNNING WINLINK CLIENT Running WinLink in Client mode enables Procomm plus to place a call and connect to the remote computer. When WinLink is launched, first select the Client option then follow with OK. WinLink will display a list of dialing entries that are currently stored in the Connection Directory. You can also load a different Connection Directory file by clicking on Change Connection Directory. WinLink displays a standard file selection dialog; simply highlight the directory file you want and click OK. If you want to dial a number that does not appear in the Connection Directory, click on Manual Dial and enter the number. Once you have dialed and connected, the Client attempts to attach to the Server. When you launch the WinLink Client over a direct connection, the Client attempts to attach to the Server immediately. Once the Client is connected, the password stored in Setup will be transmitted automatically to the remote computer. When the password is verified, Procomm Plus will allow access. RUNNING WINLINK SERVER Running WinLink in Server mode instructs Procomm plus to wait for an incoming call or connection. When WinLink detects an incoming call, it will establish a connection then wait for the remote system to transmit the password. After the password is received and verified, the remote computer will have complete access to all directories and files. You can click on Abort at any time to terminate the WinLink Server and return to the Terminal window. If a Client is connected by modem, the Server will also hang up the phone line automatically. THE CLIENT ON-LINE Once the Client has successfully attached to the Server, it displays its main dialog. The WinLink Client main dialog features a convenient "point and click" interface, consisting of two groups of similar list boxes and buttons. The controls in the Local-Client group apply to the drives, directories, and files on the Client system; the Remote-Server controls apply to the Server's. Except for the Local-Client's Execute button, the two groups of controls function identically. At this time, a user can copy files from one computer to the other. On-line help for specific WinLink operations is available by simply clicking the HELP button. When file transfers are complete, selecting or clicking on the QUIT button will disconnect Procomm plus and release the telephone line or direct connection. ============================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
