Procomm Plus 32 for Windows 95 Knowledge Base Stb Virge Video Card Conflict With Pw4.50 Remote Device Driver Situation: After installing Procomm Plus 32 and Rapid Remote on an NT system one of three symptoms can occur: 1. Other windows programs give a general protection fault when started, and after uninstalling Procomm Plus 32, these problems persist. A notable program affected by this is AUTOCAD. 2. After Installing Procomm Plus 32, your system reboots into a blue screen of death with an error message stating: DISPLAY_DRIVER.DLL is missing or corrupted. 3. You can get to the log on dialog box in Windows NT, but your keyboard and your mouse are locked. Solution: These symptoms concern an incompatibility between the RRCTRL.SYS System Device installed by Procomm and some advanced video cards. The RRCTRL.SYS file is designed to replace the video driver with a specialized version to allow for Rapid Remote to work correctly. When Procomm Plus 32 is uninstalled, this .SYS file remains. Cards with known issues include the Matrox Millenium series, the STB Virge, and the Nvidia series. Some of the video card manufacturers (Matrox is among them) have issued new drivers that alleviate these symptoms. 1.) In the case of AutoCad version 14, uninstalling Procomm Plus 32 and reinstalling AutoCad resolves this problem. Earlier versions of AutoCad may still experience this problem. 2.) Following are two ways to recover from the error message and the locked mouse and keyboard. These two solutions are written for Windows NT 4.0 only. The solutions are based upon the kind of File System Windows NT 4.0 is using: If Windows NT is NOT installed on an NTFS partition: 1. Boot the machine into DOS (or Windows 95 if dual boot machine). 2. Change to \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory. 3. In this directory, rename RRCTRL1.DLL to RRCTRL1.BAK. 4. Copy the real video driver support DLL (for example, S3.DLL, S3VIRGE.DLL, etc.) to RRCTRL1.DLL. 5. Reboot your computer into Windows NT. 6. In Windows NT, re-install your video drivers. (This is necessary because the video driver is using the RRCTRL1.DLL copy of the real video driver support DLL.) 7. Reboot the machine into DOS (or Windows 95) and delete RRCTRL1.DLL (which is really the copy of the real video driver support DLL) and rename RRCTRL1.BAK back to RRCTRL1.DLL. 8. Reboot back into Windows NT. You may need to re-install PW 4.5 to run RapidRemote. If Windows NT is installed on an NTFS partition, you will need to re-run the Windows NT installation: 1. Run Windows NT installation from the CD-ROM. 2. After the installation program copies files to the hard disk, it will reboot the machine. When it reboots, select the option to repair a damaged installation of Windows NT. 3. When prompted about performing some optional tasks as part of the repair process, you may deselect (uncheck) all of the items. (It doesn't hurt to perform these tasks, if desired.) 4. When prompted for the Emergency Repair Disk, press to have the Windows NT setup program find the NT installation on the hard drive. If the setup program fails to find the NT installation (which is unlikely unless other problems with the installation exist), you may use the Emergency Repair Disk. 5. When prompted, press to confirm the location of your Windows NT installation. 6. The setup program will prompt about restoring various registry files. In this step, check the option to restore the SYSTEM registry files only. The highlight Continue and press . 7. The setup program will check the NT installation files and may prompt you to replace some of your files. Press on these prompts to skip replacing the files. (This is very important if you've installed a Service Pack, because if you replace the files, you'll need to re-apply the Service Pack.) 8. After completing the repair, Windows NT will restart. To use RapidRemote, you'll need to re-install Procomm Plus 32 (or RapidRemote for the stand-alone version). Rapid Remote is a product designed to remotely control another computer from your computer. Rapid Remote is required on both computers for success. If you do not want to use Rapid Remote, you can complete a custom installation of Procomm Plus 32 and uncheck the box beside Remote. Rapid Remote will not be installed on the system, therefore there will be no further conflict with your advanced video driver.
