TECHNICAL BULLETIN #38 - Rev 1.00 (8/29/97) ============================================================================== TITLE : Procomm Plus Network Install Guide PRODUCT: Procomm Plus 32 (for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0) ============================================================================== Procomm Plus 32 - Network Install Guide Congratulations! You have purchased the Procomm Plus 32 Volume License! This document explains how to install the Procomm Plus 32 Volume License, either as a Shared Installation on your network with licensed workstation copies, or as a Single User Installation on your workstation. In a Shared Installation, most of the files required by Procomm Plus are installed to a network drive. After installing these files to the network, Procomm Plus workstation clients are installed from the network drive to each of the licensed workstation PCs. The workstations conveniently share the required files on the network. In a Single User Installation, files are not installed to a network drive. Instead, all of the files are installed to the workstation's hard drive. This installation also allows you to install a minimum number of files to the workstation hard drive, and the other required files are accessed from the workstation's CD-ROM drive or a network CD-ROM server. Procomm Plus's networking abilities are not limited to just the installation. Both a Shared Installation and Single User Installation can access and share modems connected to an NASI-compliant Asynchronous Communications Server (ACS) -- a network modem pool. For more information, please see "Accessing Network Modems" on page 7. Shared Installation Installing Procomm Plus 32 as a Shared Installation is a two step process. First, you install the Shared Installation files on a network drive. Second, you install client versions of Procomm Plus 32 on workstations using the Shared Installation files on the network drive. Please note that the Procomm Plus's Web Browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is incompatible with shared installations of Windows 95. Step 1: Installing the network files To install the Shared Installation files, start the Install Wizard as described in your User Guide. Select the Shared Installation option by clicking on its corresponding button. The installation proceeds as described in the User Guide, with several exceptions: Note that the Destination Directory for the Shared Installation may be a mapped network drive or a network location defined by a UNC path. However, do not specify a local path for the Destination Directory. The Destination Directory cannot be a long filename -- it must conform to 8.3 filename rules. For example, the Destination Directory could be specified as q:\programs\procomm4, or \\ds_fs2\vol4\programs\procomm4. If you have a previous installation of Procomm Plus Volume License, do not specify the network path of your previous installation in the Destination Directory field. If you install to the same network path, your previous version's data files will be overwritten, resulting in the loss of data and program functionality in the previous version. If you select the Custom installation option, the workstation clients can only access the components that you install on the network. The Install Wizard does not create Start menu items when you install the network files. These menu items are created when you install the workstation files. Step 2: Installing the workstation files To install a workstation client of Procomm Plus 32, follow the installation instructions in the User Guide, except for three important points: Launch the Install Wizard by executing setup.exe from the Destination Directory used in Step 1. You must install from the network drive rather than from the distribution media. If you are upgrading a workstation client of Procomm Plus Volume License version 4.0 or 4.01, the Install Wizard will not allow you to install Procomm Plus 32 to the same path as your previous version. The default Destination Directory for Procomm Plus 32 is \program files\procomm plus. If version 4.0 or 4.01 is installed in this path, the default Destination Directory is changed to \program files\procomm plus 4.5. The Install Wizard does not automatically convert data files from previous Procomm Plus VLA installations. For more information about converting these files to Procomm Plus 32 format, please see "Converting Your Existing Data Files" on page 5. Within the User Information dialog, only the Name field can be edited. The Company and Serial No. fields are read from Shared Installation data stored on the network drive. Single User Installation To create a Single User Installation, run the Install Wizard as described in the User Guide. When the dialog shown in Figure 1 -appears, select the Single User installation option by clicking on its corresponding button. The installation then proceeds as described in the User Guide, with the following exceptions: The Install Wizard does not automatically convert data files from previous Procomm Plus installations. For more information about converting these files to Procomm Plus 32 format, please see "Converting Your Existing Data Files" on page 5. If you are upgrading a Single User Installation of Procomm Plus Volume License version 4.0 or 4.01, the Install Wizard will not allow you to install Procomm Plus 32 to the same path as your previous version. The default Destination Directory for Procomm Plus 32 is \program files\procomm plus. If version 4.0 or 4.01 is installed in this path, the default Destination Directory is changed to \program files\procomm plus 4.5. If you have a network CD-ROM server, you can mount the Procomm Plus 32 CD-ROM on the server, and then use it to install your Single User Installation. You can even use the CD Minimal installation option so that a minimum number of files are stored on your hard drive, and the rest of the files are accessed from the CD-ROM server. Converting Your Existing Data Files If you are upgrading from a previous version of Procomm Plus Volume License (Shared Installation or Single User Installation), the Install Wizard does not convert data files from your existing version to Procomm Plus 32 format. Before you can use these files with Procomm Plus 32, you must convert them with the Procomm Plus File Conversion Utility. To launch the utility, select Procomm Plus | Procomm Plus Utilities | Directory and ASPECT Conversion from the Windows Start menu. The Procomm Plus for Windows File Conversion Utility window appears. The File Conversion Utility is easy to use. It contains an edit field for selecting files to convert, and an edit field for selecting the destination of the converted files. At the bottom of the window, the Conversion Status list box reports the utility's activities as it processes your files. Specify your files and the destination for the converted files in these fields: Files to Convert Click Browse... to select Dialing Directory/Connection Directory files, keyboard mapping files, translate tables, Meta Key files, fax cover sheets, Action Bar files, parameter files, ASPECT .was or .inc source files, User Window .uws source files, and Dialog Editor .wud files that you want to convert to Procomm Plus 32 format. Destination Directory Click Browse... to select the destination for the converted files. After you select your files and the destination, click Convert to begin the conversion, or click Exit to quit without converting the selected files. For example, the default destination for .was ASPECT scripts is \program files\procomm plus 4.5\aspect. Do not use the File Conversion Utility to convert previous Caller ID database .cid files. Instead, select a File | Import | ... menu item in the Caller ID Directory Editor and import the previous version into a new .cid file. Removing Your Previous Installation After you convert your data files, you can remove your previous installation of Procomm Plus from the network and workstations. If you have version 3.x, use the Uninstall program to remove the workstation files, and use Windows Explorer to delete the Procomm Plus files on the network drive. If you have version 1.x, 2.x 4.0, or 4.01, use Windows Explorer to delete the Procomm Plus directory structure on the workstation and network drive. Accessing Network Modems The Procomm Plus CD-ROM contains a copy of Novell's Win2NCS utility. This utility allows communication software, such as Procomm Plus 32, to access modems across a Novell network if the modems are connected to a NASI-compliant Asynchronous Communication Server (ACS). For example, Novell's Netware Connect product is a NASI-compliant ACS. The Win2NCS utility must be installed on each workstation that needs access to the ACS modems. Since Win2NCS must be configured to work with your ACS, we recommend that the network administrator install and configure this utility. The \bonus\win2ncs folder on the Procomm Plus 32 CD-ROM contains a self-extracting archive file named wncs2b.exe. Create a new folder on your hard drive and copy wncs2b.exe to the new folder. In Windows Explorer, double-click on wncs2b.exe to extract the utility and documentation. To install Win2NCS, run the setup.exe program that is extracted from the archive file. After you install and configure Win2NCS, the ACS modems appear in Procomm Plus's modem selection options, such as the Terminal window's Quick Select Line connection field and the Current Modem/Connection field in the System, Modem Connection panel in Setup. Please note that all documentation specific to Win2NCS is included within the self-extracting archive file. Win2NCS is a Novell utility and it is provided on the Procomm Plus CD-ROM as a convenience to our customers. Any technical support questions regarding Win2NCS must be directed to Novell, according to the documentation provided in the wncs2b.exe archive file. Duplicating Disks The following procedure details how you can create individual disk sets for each license. These instructions will work when you copy any of the installation diskettes onto HD 3.5" diskettes. If you have a CD-ROM copy of Procomm Plus 32 and you need a disk set for duplication purposes, please contact Quarterdeck Corporate Sales at (800) 225-8148. When the product consultant asks you for an offer code number, use #03513. 1. View the contents of My Computer. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop. You can also right-click on My Computer, and select Explore from the pop-up menu. 2. Open the Copy Disk dialog. Right-click on the 3½ Floppy icon, and select Copy Disk... 3. Insert the source diskette in your floppy drive, and click Start. The Copy Disk dialog reads the contents of the source diskette. When it is finished, it prompts you to insert the destination diskette. 4. Insert the destination diskette in your floppy drive, and click OK. The Copy Disk dialog writes the contents of the source diskette to the destination diskette. When it is finished, you can repeat Step 3 and Step 4 to copy another diskette, or click Close to close the Copy Disk dialog. ================================================================================ To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
