TECHNICAL BULLETIN #231 - Rev 1.01 (3/27/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Distinctive Ring and Procomm Plus PRODUCT : Procomm Plus for Windows 95 ============================================================================== QUESTION: What is Distinctive Ring and how can I use it with PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 95? ANSWER: Distinctive Ring is a function where multiple telephone numbers ring on the same phone line. Each number rings differently so that they can be differentiated. If you have a modem that also supports this function, you can take advantage of this feature in PROCOMM PLUS. However, the method needed is a bit differen than in previous versions of PROCOMM PLUS. Because PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 95 is a TAPI application, the Distinctive Ring function must be enabled under Windows 95. This document will walk you through the necessary steps to enable this feature and use it with PROCOMM PLUS. To enable Disitinctive Ring in Windows 95, the first thing that is needed is to update communications driver in Windows 95. The driver that ships with Windows 95, UNIMODEM, does not support Distinctive Ring. To obtain this functionality, you need to update this driver to UNIMODEM V. The update is available from the Microsoft Web Site; follow these steps. 1. Point your Web Browser to http://www.microsoft.com 2. Click the Search icon. 3. Search for UNIMODEM V. 4. When the results appear, click the link to the File Libraries. 5. Click on the link to the UNIMODEM V download page. 6. Follow the instructions on the page. Once you have downloaded this file, you need to follow the instructions in the included README file. There is one step in this file that is extremely important if the Distinctive Ring capabilities of your modem are going to usable: you must remove the modem from the Windows 95 Device Manager before installing UNIMODEM V. After installing UNIMODEM V, you next need to build an information file for your modem that includes Distinctive Ring information. To do this: 1. Select Start | Run from the Taskbar in Windows 95 and click Browse. 2. Change to the \PROGRAMS sub-directory underneath the PROCOMM PLUS home directory (for example C:\PROGRAM FILES\PROCOMM PLUS\PROGRAMS). 3. Once there double-click on the file PWINF4.EXE. 4. Select your modem manufacturer and model from the list and click OK. 5. Save the resulting .INF file in your PROCOMM PLUS directory. Next, go into the the Modem Control Panel under Windows 95 to install a new modem. As per the instructions in the PROCOMM PLUS INF Builder, select 'Don't Detect My Modem' and click Next. Click the Have Disk button and browse for the .INF file you created in the previous steps. Select the modem and continue through the install modem Wizard. Once this is done, you modem is installed with the Distinctive Ring additions. The Distinctive Ring Setup can be accessed under the Properties tab for your modem. It is here that you set how the modem should respond to the different types of Rings. ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
