TECHNICAL BULLETIN #210 - Rev 1.10 (01/10/97) ============================================================================ TITLE : Procomm Plus 4.0 Technical FAQ PRODUCT: Procomm Plus 4.0 (for Windows 95) ============================================================================ ASPECT ------ Q: What are the new or changed commands in Procomm Plus for Windows 95's ASPECT language? A: There are numerous new commands in the Procomm Plus for Windows 95 ASPECT language. For a complete listing, download Technical Bulletin #191, available from any of the Quarterdeck delivery sites. Q: When I double click on an ASPECT script from Windows Explorer the ASPECT editor opens but the script doesn't load. If I use FILE | OPEN it works fine. Why doesn't double clicking on the script from Explorer load the script in the ASPECT editor? A: Check your association for scripts. From within Explorer--VIEW | OPTIONS | FILE TYPES (choose the ASPECT source). Click on the OPEN action and click EDIT. There needs to be a "%1" (with quotes) after the path in APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM THIS ACTION. Removing that removes long filename support. CONNECTIONS ----------- Q: How do I configure Procomm Plus for Windows 95 to use my NASI connection? A: Procomm Plus for Windows 95 ships with Novell's WIN2NCS. Install and configure this to work with Windows 95. Q: Why do I receive the "Port in Use - Unable to open TAPI" message when I select Modem Command Mode from the Menu command options? A: By selecting the Menu option, you are trying to grab the port similar to selecting Direct Connect - ComX. Procomm Plus tries to talk to the modem by sending the command "ATE1V1Q0^M" to the modem. If the modem does not respond, Procomm Plus responds with the above message. Possible solutions: 1. Your external modem could be turned OFF. Turn it on. 2. Another program has control of the port. Close all programs. Verify this by using HyperTerminal to access the port. FAX TROUBLESHOOTING ------------------- Q: Why does Word causes a GPF or segment failure when I try to fax a Word document from Procomm Plus? A: Occasionally, a timing problem with DDE commands sent to Word during the creation of a fax document causes a GPF or segment failure. To fix the timing problem, add the following entry to PW4.INI. [Options] FaxDDEDelay=2000 The FaxDDEDelay INI setting by default is 1000 and represents the amount of time between each DDE command sent to Word during the creation of the fax document. INSTALL ------- Q: Even though I had selected drive D:\PW4 as my install path, I received an "insufficient disk space" error from the install program for Drive C. Drive C had 5-8 megs of free space. Why did I receive this error message for Drive C? A: Procomm Plus for Windows 95 must install .DLL files to the Windows 95 directory. Also, Internet Explorer is installed to the \Program Files\Microsoft Internet or \Program Files\Plus!\Microsoft Internet subdirectories. These are typically on C and you will not be able to change where IE is installed. Changing the TEMP environment variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to point to drive D: allows the installation to continue. Be sure to reboot your system after making the change to AUTOEXEC.BAT. INTERNET UTILITIES ------------------ Q: I just loaded Procomm Plus for Windows 95, and noticed that Microsoft has patches/updates for IE (Internet Explorer). Do I need to download IE and apply the patches/upgrades to it or can I apply the patches/updates directly to Procomm Plus for Windows 95? A: You can apply the patches/updates directly. However, you're not applying them to Procomm Plus. Procomm Plus for Windows 95 uses Internet Explorer. All IE components that Procomm Plus uses are stored on your hard drive in the same place as a stand-alone version of IE. Q: I used the Menu option (Web | Full Screen) to switch my Web browser display to full screen. How do I get back to the regular display? A: Use the keystroke sequence Ctrl-Shift-F to return to the regular display. Q: Do Procomm Plus for Windows's Mail and News clients support multiple servers and accounts? A: Yes, the database path for mail and news now give Procomm Plus the ability to support multiple news servers and multiple mail accounts on the e machine. To change mail or news databases, change the current News Action Set or Mail Option Set in Setup | Internet | Internet Connection to the database table you want. For instance, if you have two news databases called DATASTORM and Socket, you can switch between them by changing the News Options Set. When you change option sets, a mode switch from new s to news or mail to mail occurs so the new database can load. You can quickly tell which option set is in use by looking at what is displayed above the tree folder on the left-hand side of Procomm Plus. Q: When I'm composing a mail message and I click on the printer icon to print my message, the compose dialog closes instead of printing the message. On top of that, my message is not saved. Why does it do this? A: R&D is aware of this problem. In the meantime, use the File | Print menu option to print your message. Q: When I connect to the Internet through my ISP, I lose all connections to my network drives. Why does this happen? A: Your Dial-Up Networking connection is configured incorrectly. The "Log on to Network" box is checked. To fix this, open the Dial-Up Networking folder. View properties for the ISP connection. Go to Server Type settings. Uncheck the "Log on to Network" box in the Advanced options. Q: I can connect to Internet hosts by their numeric IP address. Why can't I connect by their host name? A: You're DNS (Domain Name Service) is set up improperly. DNSs for Dial Up Networking connections must be specified for the connection itself, not in the Network Control Panel applet. To verify or enter DNS addresses for a Dial Up Networking connection: 1. Open Setup | Internet | Internet Connection in Procomm Plus for Windows 95. 2. Select the appropriate Dial Up Networking connection in Current Internet Connection. 3. Select Connection Properties. 4. In the Dial Up Networking connection properties window, press Server Type. 5. In the Server Type window, select TCP/IP Settings. 6. In the TCP/IP Settings window, select Specify name server addresses (if it's not already selected) and enter the Dial Up Networking addresses in the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS fields. (Do not change the WINS entries.) 7. Press OK three times. Q: Why doesn't TCP/IP load properly, even though I've made a successful connection with my Internet Service Provider? I also receive a message which states, "Dial Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the Server Type settings...". A: Either you have unsupported protocols specified for the Dial-Up Networking connection or TCP/IP is not specified. To fix this: 1. Open Setup | Internet | Internet Connection in Procomm Plus for Windows 95. 2. Select the appropriate Dial Up Networking connection in Current Internet Connection. 3. Select Connection Properties. 4. In the Dial Up Networking connection properties window, select Server Type. 5. In the Server Type window, ensure that neither NetBEUI nor IPX/SPX Compatible protocols are enabled in the Allowed network protocols section. Ensure that TCP/IP is enabled (checked). 6. Press OK two times. MODEM SETUP ----------- Q: My modem is not directly supported by Windows 95. How can I get an .INF file to work with Procomm Plus? A: Procomm Plus works best if you have an updated Windows 95 Information (.INF) file for your modem. In most cases, your modem manufacturer will provide this with your modem. However, Quarterdeck has included an INF Builder utility that can generate .INF files for over 1,200 different modems. The utility (pwinf4.exe) is located in your \programs directory. Q: Does Procomm Plus for Windows 95 support Caller ID and Distinctive Ring? A: Since Procomm Plus for Windows 95 is TAPI compliant, Caller ID and Distinctive Ring are handled by TAPI. However, neither Caller ID nor Distinctive Ring are available with UNIMODEM, a function of Windows 95's TAPI. In order to get Caller ID and Distinctive Ring to work, you'll need to install UNIMODEMV. UNIMODEMV can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/kb/softlib/mslfiles/UNIMODV.EXE (Note: Adaptive Answer isn't supported by either UNIMODEM or UNIMODEMv. Some modifications were done to Procomm Plus for Windows 95's FAPI to make Adaptive Answer functional.) REMOTE ------ Q: Can I connect to Procomm Plus for Windows 95 Remote Host using Windows Terminal, HyperTerminal, Dial Up Networking, or any other terminal program? A: No. You must configure Procomm Plus for Windows 95 Remote Client to connect to the Remote Host. ============================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
