TECHNICAL BULLETIN #109 - Rev 1.00 (3/17/98) ============================================================================== TITLE : Procomm Connections version 4.60 Technical FAQ PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS Connections 4.6x ============================================================================== ASPECT Question: When I double click on an ASPECT script from Windows Explorer the ASPECT editor opens, but the script does not load. If I use FILE | OPEN it works fine. Why doesn't double clicking on the script from Explorer load the script in the ASPECT editor? Answer: Check your association for scripts. From within Explorer-VIEW | OPTIONS | FILE TYPES (choose the ASPECT source). Click on the OPEN action and click EDIT. There needs to be a "%1" (with quotes) after the path in APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM THIS ACTION. Removing that removes long filename support. Question: I cannot get the DLLLOAD command to work. What am I doing wrong? Answer: The ASPECT command DLLLOAD will only load 32-bit .DLL files. Question: I have an ASPECT script from a previous version of Procomm Plus that I copied over to my new installation of Procomm Connections. When I attempt to execute this script I receive the error "Compiler or compiled script incompatible with this version of Procomm Plus." Can I use my old script with the new version? Answer: Procomm Connections includes a File Conversion Utility that can be used to convert ASPECT scripts from previous versions of Procomm Plus. However, in many cases you may be able to just recompile the old source (.WAS) file. This will create a new .WAX file which is compatible with Procomm Connections. CONNECTIONS Question: How do I configure Procomm Connections to use my NASI connection? Answer: Procomm Connections ships with Novell's WIN2NCS. Install and configure this to work with Windows 95. Question: Why do I receive the "Port in Use - Unable to Open TAPI" message when I select Modem Command Mode from the Menu command options? Answer: By selecting the Menu option, you are trying to grab the port similar to selecting Direct Connect - ComX. Procomm tries to talk to the modem by sending the command "ATE1V1Q0^M" to the modem. If the modem does not respond, Procomm responds with the above message. Possible solutions: 1. Your external modem could be turned off. Turn it on. 2. Another program has control of the port. Close all programs. Verify this by using HyperTerminal to access the port. DIAL-UP NETWORKING Question: The Connect To dialog includes a Save Password checkbox which is disabled. How do I enable this setting? Answer: You need to do one of two things: 1. Install the Client for Microsoft Networks client in the Network applet of the Control Panel if it is not already installed. 2. If the Client for Microsoft Networks is already installed, but the Save Password checkbox is still disabled, your password file may be corrupt. To correct the situation, delete all files with the extension .PWL from your \WINDOWS directory. WARNING: this option will remove all passwords from the system and you will be forced to enter passwords for all network connections. FTP Question: When I connect to my FTP host, the filenames and folders are not displayed for the host. Why? Answer: The FTP window cannot display the folder (directory) listings from some FTP servers. If the Remote pane fails to display the server's filenames/folders, or if the FTP window immediately disconnects after it connects to a server, you must remove the remote file filter. Select the Options | FTP Options | Folder Options... menu item, and then remove the contents of the Remote files edit field. Click OK to close Setup, and attempt a connection with the FTP server. Question: When I attempt to change directories on the server during a FTP connection, I receive the error "550 filename: No such file or directory." I know the directory exists. What is wrong? Answer: Due to the directory format of some FTP servers, you may receive one of the following errors when you attempt to change directories on the server or copy a file form the server: "550 filename: No such file or directory" or "550 dirname: Not a directory." These errors typically occur when the host uses a "link" to redirect the server to a different location. Select FTP | Expand Remote Folder from the menu, and then check for a name which corresponds to the name of the item that gave the error in the expanded directory listing. It will probably have an arrow ("->") which shows the actual file name and/or server path to the requested item. You can then \ navigate to that location to retrieve the desired file. INSTALL/GENERAL Question: I received a memory error during installation, but I have plenty of space on the drive to which Procomm Plus 32 is to be installed. Answer: Low disk space on the drive used for TEMP files can cause installation errors. Make sure that this drive has at least 5 MB of available disk space. Question: When I tried to uninstall Procomm Connections I received multiple error messages. Why does this hapen? Answer: When installing Procomm Connections, do not specify a Destination Directory that exceeds 63 characters in length. Question: I cannot use ASPECT. Why? Answer: In a Custom installation, you must select the Data/Internet component if you intend to use ASPECT scripts. Question: I can't print from Procomm Connections? What is wrong? Answer: One cause of printing failures is if the combination of your printer name and printer queue exceed 64 characters in length, Procomm cannot print. Question: Does Procomm Connections include any troubleshooting information besides the Help file? Answer: Yes. If you have a CD-ROM version of Procomm, you can view a variety of Technical Bulletins in the \whtppr directory on the Procomm Connections CD-ROM. MODEM SETUP Question: My modem is not directly supported by Windows 95 or Windows NT. How can I get an .INF file to work with Procomm Connections? Answer: Procomm Connections works best if you have an updated Windows Information (.INF) file for you modem. In most cases, your modem manufacturer will provide this with your modem. However, Quarterdeck has included an INF Builder utility that can generate .INF files for over 1,200 different modems. The utility (PWINF4.EXE) is located in your \PROGRAMS directory. REMOTE ACCESS SERVICE (RAS) Question: When I attempt to connect to an Internet address, RAS will not auto-dial. What is the problem? Answer: Windows NT 4.0 Remote Access Service (RAS) will not auto-dial if you have TCP/IP bound to a LAN adapter. The following procedure details how to enable RAS auto-dialing. Note: After following this procedure, you will lose TCP/IP support via your LAN. However, reverse the steps below to re-enable TCP/IP for your network adapter. 1. Open the NT 4.0 Control Panel. 2. Open the Network Control Panel applet. 3. Select the Bindings tab in the Network applet. 4. In the Show Bindings For drop-down list, select All Adapters. The default setting is all services. 5. The list box displays your LAN adapter, such an Intel Ether Express 16 LAN Adapter, and one or more Remote Access WAN Wrapper items. Click on the "+" next to LAN Adapter to expand the list of installed transports/protocols. 6. Select TCP/IP Protocol and press the Disable button. The icon for the TCP/IP Protocol will change from a network cable to a red circle with a line through it. 7. Repeat step #6 for WINS Client(TCP/IP). 8. Press OK in Network window to apply the changes. 9. You will be prompted to restart Windows-you must restart for your changes to take effect. After you complete this procedure, RAS will attempt to auto-dial your ISP whenever you attempt to make a TCP/IP connection, you will see a dialog with a message similar to "Cannot reach ftp.quarterdeck.com Error! Bookmark not defined... Do you want to dial a remote network?" Click Yes, Dial in this dialog, and RAS displays the RAS dialing dialog that allows you to select the ISP connection that you want to dial. ============================================================================= To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
