TECHNICAL BULLETIN #161 - Rev 1.00 (8/1/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Troubleshooting Adaptive Answer PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS 3.x for Windows ============================================================================== Adaptive Answer is your modem's ability to distinguish between an incoming data or fax call. If you believe your modem supports this feature, but does not respond differently when answering calls from different sources, this document may help. CONFIRM AND ENABLE ADAPTIVE ANSWER Follow these steps to make sure Adaptive Answer is available and turned on in your modem. 1. From the Menu bar, select Setup | System | Answer Options. - If your Auto Answer Mode box is set to OFF, your modem will not answer calls. - If your Auto Answer Mode is set to DATA, your modem will only answer data calls. - If Auto Answer is set to FAX, your modem will only answer Fax calls. 2. Click the Down-arrow in the Auto answer mode selection box and select DATA and FAX. NOTE: If your modem does not support Adaptive Answer, this option will be grayed out. 3. Click OK to save your settings and leave Current Setup. MODEM STILL NOT PERFORMING ADAPTIVE ANSWER Is the modem capable of Adaptive Answer? 1. At the Data Terminal screen issue the following commands to your modem: AT+FAE=1 (for CLASS 1) AT+FAA=1 (for CLASS 2) If you see 'ERROR' on either command, your modem does not support Adaptive Answer functions for that fax class. If you see OK on either command your modem may support Adaptive Answer. IMPORTANT NOTE: In some cases, modem manufacturers have designed modems to answer positive to Adaptive Answer commands, while the feature is not actually supported. If your modem appears to support Adaptive answer but won't work, continue with the following procedures. 2. From the Menu bar, select Setup | Fax | Fax Connection | Adaptive Answer. 3. If there are no commands in these boxes, or the Fax connect message is BLANK, Adaptive Answer is not supported. MODEM STILL NOT ADAPTING - IS IT THE BAUD RATE? Some modems that support Adaptive Answer will not work properly unless the baud rate between the PC and modem (DTE rate) matches the baud rate between modems (DCE rate). In most cases, PROCOMM PLUS takes care of baud rate negotiations, but if you continue to have problems, experimenting with different baud rates may help. PROCOMM PLUS defaults to 19200 bits per second for the fax DTE rate, which is the most reliable speed for most fax modems. If this rate is incorrect for your modem, you can raise or lower it. Unfortunately, there is no way to determine which speeds your modem is able to use when faxing. To check or adjust the fax baud rate: 1. From the Menu bar, select Setup | Fax | Fax Connection | General. 2. To adjust the baud rate, click the down arrow in the Fax Baud Rate (DTE) box and select the speed you wish to experiment with. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS - CONTACT YOUR MODEM MANUFACTURER If you have determined your settings are correct in PROCOMM PLUS for your modem and have experimented with the baud rates on the data and fax side with no success, contact your modem manufacturer. There may be an updated driver or revision available for your modem. ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
