TECHNICAL BULLETIN #88 - Rev 1.00 (5/13/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : RPI Modem Setup PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.xx ============================================================================== This paper describes the operation of RPIBIOS.DLC, a Dynamic Link Connection module that allows PROCOMM PLUS to communicate with WinDAPI, the software-based V.42/MNP .DLL written in conjunction with Rockwell International. This .DLL is specifically for use with modems equipped with Rockwell RPI chip sets, such as the RC224ATF/ATL, 144ATI and all future RPI chip sets. Using RPIBIOS.DLC, you can make error-free connections and realize speed gains through connections utilizing MNP-5 or V.42bis data compression. MAKING THE CONNECTION To create a custom PROCOMM PLUS RPIBIOS connection, follow these steps: 1. Open the Setup window and select the Data/Modem Connection group. 2. Click on Install New Modem or Connection. From the drop-down list box, select your RPI-compatible modem from the list of available modems. If your modem does not appear in the list, select a Hayes-compatible modem instead. 3. From the Select Port list box, scroll through the list until you see the "RCOM1 - Rockwell WinDAPI " entry. Select the RCOM entry that lists the COM port used by your modem; if your modem uses COM2, select RCOM2. Note that this entry will NOT appear if the RPIBIOS.DLC or the WINDAPI.DLL files haven't been copied to your PROCOMM PLUS home directory. 4. Click on the Setup Port button. At this point, you can: > assign V.42bis negotiation. The default is Both (During Transmit and Receive) and will work well under normal circumstances. > specify whether MNP-5 data compression will be used during MNP error correction. The default is ON. If you will be transferring compressed "archive" files - such as those ending in .ZIP, .ARC, .LZH, or .ARJ, be sure to set this option to OFF. Using MNP -5 when transferring compressed files will actually take longer to finish the file transfer. > specify the Connection Protocol to be used. The default, Auto Detect, will work well under normal circumstances. If you know that the modem with which you're connecting is not an error-correcting model, select None from the list. 5. Click on the OK button on the WinDAPI dialog box. 6. If your RPI-based modem did not appear in the available modem list in step 2, click on the Data Modem Commands subgroup; from there, click on the Advanced button. Examine the modem initialization string - it should end in the characters ^M (for carriage return). Edit the string by adding the string +H1 directly before the ^M. Your modem initialization string might now look like this: AT&FE1V1Q0&C1&D2S7=60S11=60+H1^M 7. Once you've added the +H1 command, click on OK. 8. If your modem supports fax features, select the Fax Connection Setup group. Click on the Install New Fax Modem button. Select your fax modem from the list; if it is not listed, select Generic Class 1 Fax, 2400 Data Modem. Also, select the actual COM port the modem uses--do not select the same RCOM port that was selected above. Click on OK to exit the Modem Install dialog. 9. Click on OK to exit the Setup window. 10. From the Online pull down menu, select Initialize Modem. You've now created a RPIBIOS connection entry! For more information about specifying this connection as the default or adding it to one or more Dialing Directory entries, please refer to your PROCOMM PLUS User Manual. TROUBLESHOOTING * Use with other Network .DLCs: PROCOMM PLUS does not support concurrent use of both RPIBIOS.DLC and any other .DLC (PWNCSI.DLC, PNETBIOS.DLC, EBIOS.DLC, etc.) Multiple .DLC usage will be addressed in a future version of PROCOMM PLUS. It is also not recommended that you switch to RPIB IOS.DLC from another .DLC. * Immediate Disconnection and/or Loss of Initial Data: If you are using the PC Speaker Wave driver to play .WAV files for Windows system events, you may experience immediate disconnection when calling another computer. The PC Speaker driver's setup dialog (available from the Control Panel Drivers dialog) includes the checkbox Enable Interrupts, which is disabled by default. It is recommended that the Enable Interrupts checkbox be checked. Also, from the PROCOMM PLUS Setup window, select Sound and Alarm and either reduce your Alarm Time to 1 second or turn the Alarm Time off. ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
