TECHNICAL BULLETIN #73 - Rev 1.01 (5/13/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Fax and Data Port Sharing PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, All versions ============================================================================== This document provides background information on how PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x coordinates access to the communication port for both fax and data transmissions, and how this access is affected by some of the settings in PROCOMM PLUS. HOW DO THE FAX AND DATA FUNCTIONS SHARE THE PORT? PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x manages access to the communication port for both fax and data reception by allowing two separate program modules to simultaneously monitor the communication port. Either PW2.EXE, which handles data, or FAXSTAT.EXE, which handles faxes, will take over port access depending on whether you are sending or receiving computer-to-computer data, such as text or files, or whether you are sending or receiving faxes. FAXSTAT.EXE will have access to the communication port * when sending a Fax from PROCOMM PLUS. * when sending a fax from another application through the fax printer driver installed by PROCOMM PLUS. * when a previously scheduled fax is waiting for transmission in the fax send queue. * when you are set to Fax in the Auto Answer options. * when you are set to Fax and Data in the Auto-Answer options (only available if your fax modem supports Adaptive Answer). * when you are set to Distinctive Ring in the Auto-Answer options (only available if your fax modem supports Distinctive Ring). * if you run a script that causes a fax to be sent or that changes a setting affecting faxes. * if Fax, Fax and Data, or Distinctive Ring Auto Answer options are set as the default when you start PROCOMM PLUS (i.e. they were in effect the last time you exited PROCOMM PLUS). ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
