TECHNICAL BULLETIN #59 - Rev 1.00 (5/13/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : FAXSTAT Error Messages PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.xx ============================================================================== The fax features of PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.0x are a powerful set of tools which are compatible with a variety of hardware and software. However, there is always the possibility of conflicts. Here are some potential error messages you might encounter and their solutions. "GENERAL FAILURE" If you are sending a fax with PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, a variety of setup problems result with FAXSTAT issuing the "General Failure" error message. This message is usually due to a fax setup problem or user error on the receiving fax modem/fax machine, such as a fax machine out of paper, a fax attempt aborted by the machine or user, insufficient memory for received faxes, or other fax modem/fax machine setup problems. Verify the state of the other fax modem/fax machine with its user. Have the user reset the device and try to send your fax again. "SERIAL COMM OR FILE SYSTEM ERROR" This error message is usually seen when PROCOMM PLUS for Windows cannot initialize the fax modem to fax mode. This may be related to the fax modem setup in PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, or a general setup failure in the fax modem. Some modems, such as some Digicom and Cardinal models, use digital signal processing (DSP) to emulate the entire modem and require a firmware download for each mode (fax or data or voice). By using a Windows utility shipped with the modem, you can update the firmware for whichever mode you need to use. If you are using a fax modem with downloading firmware, try sending a fax after configuring the modem's firmware for fax mode. If your modem does not require firmware downloads, you may have PROCOMM PLUS for Windows configured incorrectly for your fax modem. PROCEDURE: 1. From PROCOMM PLUS' Terminal window, press to activate the "Setup" menu and select the "Setup" option. 2. Scroll through the Setup groups with the scroll bar and select the "Fax Connection" group. 3. What fax modem and COM port are selected in the "Current Fax Connection" field? If your fax modem is listed correctly, click on the "Use Install Defaults" push-button. If your fax modem is not listed or is listed incorrectly, click on the "Install New Fax Modem" push-button. Let PROCOMM PLUS detect your hardware by clicking on the "Start Search" push-button in the "Auto Detect" section. When PROCOMM PLUS is finished, it will display the configuration(s) which match your hardware setup. Select the correct setup and click on the "OK" push-button. In addition, you may be prompted to select an operating mode for your fax modem. Select "Auto Reliable" and click on the "OK" push-button. 4. Click on the "Current Setup" window's "OK" push-button. 5. Initialize the fax modem by selecting "Initialize Fax Modem" from the "Fax" menu and try to send another fax. ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
