TECHNICAL BULLETIN #51 - Rev 1.00 (8/1/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Disabling/Restoring Fax Support PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.xx ============================================================================== There may be some situations in which you want to disable the fax capabilities of PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x. This document describes how to disable, as well as restore, the fax capabilities of PROCOMM PLUS for Windows. WHY WOULD I WANT TO DISABLE FAX SUPPORT? For the vast majority of people, the fax support in PROCOMM PLUS will be transparent and will not interfere with any other tasks they may perform under Windows. Some people may encounter a situation in which they will need to disable the fax support in PROCOMM PLUS in the course of troubleshooting a hardware or software problem on their computer system. Some people purchase PROCOMM PLUS specifically for its data capabilities and have no use for its fax capabilities. While the fax support in PROCOMM PLUS takes up very few system resources, some people may want to remove the fax support in order to free up the small amount of system resources normally used by the fax capabilities. Should you have a reason to disable the fax support in PROCOMM PLUS, the steps below will guide you through the process. Please note that this will completely disable the ability of PROCOMM PLUS to send or receive any faxes. As long as you follow the procedure below, you can re-enable fax support by reversing the process. If you have trouble reversing the process, you can re-install PROCOMM PLUS to regenerate the necessary files and settings. DISABLING FAX SUPPORT The following steps will render PROCOMM PLUS for Windows incapable of sending or receiving faxes until you reverse the process. Type PW2.INI in the Command Line field and click OK. 4. Within Notepad, select Find from the Search menu, type [Options] in the Find What field, and click OK. 5. Exit PROCOMM PLUS and close FAXSTAT if these programs are currently running. 2. Rename the fax module, FAXSTAT.EXE, so that it can't be loaded. This program is found in the main PROCOMM PLUS directory (usually C:\PROWIN2). For example, rename the file FAXSTAT.EXE to FAXSTAT.OLD by using the Windows File Manager. 3. Disable the virtual device driver DSTASK.386 that was added to your Windows configuration when you installed PROCOMM PLUS by following these steps: a) Use the Windows Notepad utility to open the SYSTEM.INI file in the main Windows directory (usually called C:\WINDOWS). b) Scroll down through the SYSTEM.INI file until you find the section labeled [386Enh]. c) Search the [386Enh] section for the "device=dstask.386" entry. d) Once you find this entry, insert a semicolon (;) in front of the entry. e) From the File menu, select Exit. f) When you are prompted to save the changes to SYSTEM.INI, click on the YES button. 4. You must now exit and restart Windows in order for the changes to take effect. RESTORING FAX SUPPORT.
