TECHNICAL BULLETIN #49 - Rev 1.00 (8/1/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Distinctive Ring PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.xx and 3.xx ============================================================================== Distinctive ring is a service offered by most telephone companies that allows two or more separate telephone numbers to co-exist on the same physical telephone line. Each telephone number uses its own unique ring sound, so your telephone rings in a different way depending on which number is being called. Once you answer the call, all of the telephone numbers using that physical line return a busy signal until you hang up the telephone. In this document, you'll learn how to configure PROCOMM PLUS for Windows for use with a telephone line equipped with distinctive ring. If your modem supports distinctive ring and you subscribe to this service, PROCOMM PLUS for Windows can selectively "manage" your incoming calls. You can configure the program to ignore calls from the telephone number(s) you specify (for example, a number dedicated to voice telephone calls) while it answers calls from others. Distinctive ring can be especially valuable if you'd like to differentiate incoming voice and fax calls without spending money on an additional telephone line. CONFIGURING PROCOMM PLUS FOR DISTINCTIVE RING IMPORTANT: If your modem supports distinctive ring and it's listed as one of the modems directly supported by PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, it will be automatically configured during the installation process. Steps 1 through 5 are required only if your modem is not specifically recognized by PROCOMM PLUS for Windows. To configure PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 3.xx for use with distinctive ring, follow these steps: 1. From the Terminal window menu bar, click "Setup" then "System" then "System connection" "Other." 2. If your modem requires an enable command to turn on Distinctive Ring operation, enter it in the Enable command field. You should also enter the proper Disable command to turn off Distinctive Ring. Both command strings should be listed in your modem manual. Together, these commands allow you to toggle Distinctive Ring on and off from the Setup menu by selecting the Auto-Answer item. 3. You will see a column of buttons to the left, click on the one marked "Answer Options." You must specify up to four result messages in the fields labeled "Ring A message" through "Ring D message". These messages are returned by your modem to indicate which number is ringing. 4. The Auto Answer Mode drop down box will allow you to choose the following options: "None" (do not answer the call), "Data" (answer as a data call), "Fax" (answer as a fax call) and "Data & Fax". If you specify Data, PROCOMM PLUS will disconnect if it receives a fax call; if set to Fax, PROCOMM PLUS disconnects any incoming data calls. The Data & Fax option is used only if your modem supports adaptive answer and it allows PROCOMM PLUS to recognize and answer both data and fax calls. Note that you can also run an ASPECT script automatically for each number whenever a proper connection is made. To configure PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.xx for use with distinctive ring, follow these steps: 1. From the Terminal window menu bar, click "Setup" then "Extended menu" then "Data modem connection" and "Distinctive ring." 2. 3. You must specify up to four result messages in the fields labeled "Ring A message" through "Ring D message". These messages are returned by your modem to indicate which number is ringing. 4. At this point, you've configured PROCOMM PLUS to work with your modem. However, in order to "program" what will happen when each telephone number rings, we must also make changes within another Setup group. Use the scroll bar to move the group buttons on the left side of the Setup window until you see the "Answer Options" button, and click on it. 5. Under Distinctive Ring Action, you can specify which of the four possible responses PROCOMM PLUS will make when the modem reports a ring from each telephone number. The actions are: "None" (do not answer the call), "Data" (answer as a data call), "Fax" (answer as a fax call) and "Data & Fax". ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
