TECHNICAL BULLETIN #118 - Rev 1.00 (7/30/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Installation Problem: Unable to Create Icons PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.xx ============================================================================== This document explains what to do if you get the error: "Unable to create item in Program Manager Group PROCOMM PLUS 2, Item host script; c:\prowin2\pw2.exe, 5". WHY DOES THIS ERROR OCCUR? During the installation of PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x, 22 icons are created and placed into a single Program Manager group or Start Menu folder. Certain video adapter cards do not provide enough video memory for the creation of these icons. This error message is displayed because we have used all the available video memory set aside for icons. You can resolve this problem in one of two ways: 1. You will need to temporarily change the video driver and reinstall PROCOMM PLUS for Windows. -or- 2. Finish the install manually. CHANGING THE VIDEO DRIVER IN WINDOWS 3.X 1. Open your MAIN program group and double click on Windows Setup. 2. From the Options menu, choose Change System Settings. * Make a note of the video driver you are currently using, as you will need to reinstall this at a later time. 3. Click the arrow to the right of the display settings. Or press . This list displays drivers supported for that setting. Use the scroll bar or arrow keys to see more of the list. 4. Scroll through the list and select VGA and click OK. * Setup may prompt you to insert a Windows disk into drive A. Put the requested disk in drive A and close the drive door, or type the path of the appropriate device-driver file. * If prompted to use the currently installed driver or install a new driver, choose current. 5. At this point you will be prompted to restart Windows. Make sure there are no disks in any floppy disk drives, and then choose the Restart Windows button. When Windows restarts, the new settings will be in effect. 6. Reinstall PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x. 7. Edit your system.ini file (located in the SYSTEM directory off of WINDOWS or WIN95) and add: device=dstask.386 to the [386Enh] section. Save this file. 2. Edit your win.ini (also in the SYSTEM directory) and take our program out of the "load=" line. Save this file. 3. Restart Windows. 4.
