TECHNICAL BULLETIN #86 - Rev 1.00 (7/31/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Common File Transfer Problems PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS 2.01 (DOS) ============================================================================== Having trouble transferring files between your PC and other computers? This document may help. It discusses program settings which affect file transfers and details some common file transfer problems and solutions. DOWNLOAD ONLINE.DOC FROM THE QUARTERDECK BBS Following the tutorial instructions on pages 43 to 47 of your User Manual, attempt to download ONLINE.DOC from our BBS. Instead of selecting the XMODEM protocol as instructed on page 47, press "Z" to select the ZMODEM protocol. The rest of this bulletin offers advice if you run into problems. AUTOMATIC DOWNLOAD SETTINGS With the above ZMODEM transfer, if absolutely nothing happens, or just a burst of garbage characters appears on screen, you may not have configured your program correctly for automatic downloads. Try the following steps. 1. From the terminal mode press "Alt-S" to access the Current Setup menu. 2. From the main menu of setup, press "P" for Protocol options. 3. From the protocol option menu, press "Z" for ZMODEM options. 4. From the ZMODEM option menu, check field "C" labeled "auto downloading". If it is not set "ON", then a. Press "C" to edit. b. Press the spacebar to turn it on. c. Press Enter to accept the change. d. Press the escape key twice to return to the beginning of the setup menu. Press "S" for Save if you wish to save the change you have made. Press the escape key once more to return to the terminal screen. 5. At this point you should be communicating with the BBS once more. Follow the instructions in your manual's tutorial section to download the "ONLINE.DOC" file. ABORT TRANSFER SETTINGS If your file transfer progress window appears after you initiate the transfer but then quits immediately, or quits and displays the error message "NO CARRIER", then you may solve this by setting PROCOMM PLUS to ignore the carrier detect line. 1. From the Terminal mode, press "Alt-S" to access the Setup menu. 2. From the main menu of Setup, press "P" for Protocol options. 3. From the Protocol Option menu, press "G" for General Protocol options. 4. From the General Protocol options menu, check field "C" labeled "Abort xfer if CD lost". 5. If field "C" is set to "YES", turn it off by pressing "C" to edit, then press the spacebar to turn it off, and then press Enter to accept the change. 6. Press the escape key twice to return to the beginning of the setup menu, Press "S" for Save, if you wish to save the change you have made. Press the escape key once more to return to the terminal screen. 7. At this point you should be communicating with the BBS once more. Follow the instructions in your manual's tutorial section to download the "ONLINE.DOC" file. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS If the software switch settings listed above don't solve your transfer problem, and you are using an external modem, then there is an excellent chance you have either a faulty serial cable or port which is not accurately passing voltage on the CD wire. You may want to test this by replacing the serial cable with a new one, or try attaching your modem to a different serial port on your PC. Likewise, 9 to 25 pin serial cable adapters are prime suspects for losing voltage in this situation. DOWNLOAD DIRECTORY SETTINGS Another cause for a download immediately stopping might be an invalid directory setting for downloaded files. You should check your download directory settings to confirm where PROCOMM PLUS attempts to store downloaded files. PROCOMM PLUS for DOS will not confirm the presence of an existing subdirectory name when a user edits his Download Directory settings. 1. From Terminal mode, press "Alt-S" to access the Current Setup menu. 2. From the main menu of setup, press "F" for "File/Path options". 3. From the File/Path options menu, check field "C" labeled "Default path for downloaded files". Confirm that the Drive and path setting there is valid and that the text is entered in the format of "Drive:\path\" (e.g., "C:\PCPLUS\DNLOAD"). 4. Does the listed subdirectory still exist? If you're not sure, try testing by simply pressing "C" to edit the Default path field, then delete all the characters entered within the field. Press enter to accept the change, and escape back to Terminal mode to test again. 5. With the default download path blanked out, PCPLUS will download to the current subdirectory. If this is successful, then either save the setup with the download path field blank or enter a valid DOS subdirectory into the download path field and save the change. ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
