TECHNICAL BULLETIN #25 - Rev 1.00 (8/1/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : Recommended PROCOMM PLUS .PIF Settings PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS 2.01 (DOS) ============================================================================== The PCPLUS.PIF file shipped with PROCOMM PLUS version 2.01 should be customized for the Windows mode you are using. Here's how to change the PCPLUS.PIF file for Standard and 386 Enhanced Windows modes. EDIT THE DEFAULT PCPLUS.PIF FILE 1. In the Windows Program Manager, select the Main Group. 2. Run the PIF Editor program by double-clicking on the PIF Editor icon. 3. Select the File menu option and choose Open. 4. Select the home directory of PROCOMM PLUS from the "Directories" box and PCPLUS.PIF should appear in the "File Name:" box. Open the PCPLUS.PIF file by highlighting it and choosing OK. The PIF Editor will present information in one of two formats, depending on whether Windows is running in Standard or 386 Enhanced Mode. PIF FIELDS IMPORTANT TO PROCOMM PLUS Program Filename - The name of the PROCOMM PLUS executable file, PCPLUS.EXE. Window Title - The name to be displayed on the title bar of the PROCOMM PLUS window. Start-up Directory - The path, including drive, of the PROCOMM PLUS home directory. Video Memory - The video mode you want the application to start in. Select the Text radiobutton. Video Mode - The same as the 386 Enhanced Mode Video Memory option described above. Memory Requirements - In Standard Mode, the minimum amount of memory that PROCOMM PLUS requires to run. In 386 Enhanced Mode, both the minimum and maximum amount of memory Windows will allocate to PROCOMM PLUS. Directly Modifies - Standard mode only. The resources PROCOMM PLUS can modify. Display Usage - Start PROCOMM PLUS windowed or full-screen. Execution - Select the Background option to allow PROCOMM PLUS to continue to run when it is not the foreground application. Close Window on Exit - Leave this option selected if you are running Windows in 386 Enhanced Mode. Edit PCPLUS.PIF and select this option if you are running Windows in Standard Mode. 386 ENHANCED MODE ADVANCED PIF OPTIONS IMPORTANT TO PROCOMM PLUS Background Priority - Sets the priority PROCOMM PLUS will receive, relative to other running DOS applications, when running in the background. Monitor Ports - Select Text instead of High Graphics to insure that PROCOMM PLUS's screen display is restored correctly. This setting only affects applications running in a windowed state. Emulate Text Mode - Select this to allow Windows to speed up the display when standard ROM BIOS calls are used by the application. Retain Video Memory - Select this to cause Windows to allocate memory for the display. Allow Fast Paste - Allows Windows to use a fast method to paste information to the application. Leave this option selected. STANDARD MODE PCPLUS.PIF CHANGES 1. Enter "256" in the KB Required field. 2. Check the boxes by the COM ports you use, to the right of Directly Modifies. 3. Select the File menu option and Save the PCPLUS.PIF file. 386 ENHANCED MODE PCPLUS.PIF CHANGES 1. Select the Advanced pushbutton. 2. In the Display Options section, deselect the High Graphics option. 3. Select the Text option. 4. Select the Emulate Text Mode option. 5. Select the Retain Video Memory option. 6.
