TECHNICAL BULLETIN #21 - Rev 1.00 (5/13/96) ============================================================================== TITLE : How to Install My High Speed Modem? It's Not on the List! PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS 2.01 (DOS) ============================================================================== PROCOMM PLUS for DOS version 2.0x supports newer high speed modems. If you don't find your modem on the list of known modems when you install the program, here's how to configure your modem and the program to work correctly. MODEM INITIALIZATION STRING & SETTINGS 1. Start PROCOMM PLUS. Press ALT-S to open the Setup menu. 2. Select Modem Options and press Enter. 3. Select Modem Commands and press Enter. 4. Press the letter A to edit the Modem Initialization command. 5. Type in the following commands: AT&F^M~ ~ ~ AT&C1&D2S7=60S11=60^M 6. Press Enter to keep the entry. 7. Press Escape to return to the Modem Options menu. 8. Select General Options and press Enter. 9. Press the letter C to select "Auto baud detect". Press the space bar to toggle it to OFF. Press Enter. 10. Press Escape to return to the Modem Options menu. 11. Select Result Messages and press Enter. 12. Access each of the baud rate fields by pressing the letter next to it. Edit fields A to G to read CONNECT . 13. Press Escape twice to return to the Main Setup menu. 14. Select Terminal Options and press Enter. 15. Press the letter D to select "Hard flow control". Press the space bar to toggle it to ON. Press Enter. 16. Press Escape to return to the Main Setup menu. 17. Select Host Mode Options and press Enter. 18. Press ALT-D to open the Dialing Directory. Press R to revise each entry, setting the baud rate to the highest rate your modem supports. See "Selecting your default baud rate" below for help. DEFAULT BAUD RATES Modem Baudrate | Internal Modem | External Modem | External Modem & Compression | | with 16550 | with 8250/16450 ===================|==================|==================|================= 2400 v.42bis/MNP-5 | 9,600 | 9,600 | 9,600 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9600 V.42bis/MNP-5 | 38,400 | 38,400 | 19,200 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14400, or faster | 57,600 | 57,600 | 19,200 V.42bis/MNP-5 | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SELECTING YOUR DEFAULT BAUD RATE If you have an internal high speed modem, set your default baud rate to either 9,600 bits per second (bps), 38400 bps, or 57,600 bps, depending on the maximum modem-to-modem rate your modem supports (see the Default Baud rate table above). If you have an external modem, your default baud rate will depend on the kind of UART you have in the serial port connected to your modem. Ports with 16550-type UART's support much higher data throughput than earlier 8250 or 16450 UART's. You can often tell which kind you have by examining the numbers on the chips on your serial card. If you are unsure which kind you have, set your default baud rate to the highest rate your modem supports. If you notice lost characters or excessive block resends when receiving data, you may have to reduce your default rate to 19,200 bps. ========================================================================== To ensure that you have the latest version of this document, compare its revision number to that of the same document on any of our support sites.
